Day 1 Longuich to Bernkastel- Kues (and the evening before) - 31 miles

View of the cathedral off the main square in Frankfurt - the evening before our departure.

A plaque remembers the mass, public burning of books by the National Socialists in 1933.
 Hard to imagine.

Our start point was the village of Longuich.

Morning briefing - a short but pretty ride along the Moselle river. The area is famous for wine growing.
Pete looking more thoughtful than usual

River traffic along the Moselle was mostly leisurely.
A path hugged the river and was fully of cyclists, walkers, runners, a few scooters and the occasional random car!
 Some random cliff signs also.
The Romans were here, leaving their mark, in this case with a rather splendid gravestone of a wine grower with a replica of the ‘Roman wine ship’ at Neumagen-Dhron.
 Serious about his wine.

 Complete gravestone.
Villages on the way to Bernkastel-Kues were super pretty with half timbered houses.

We flip-flopped over the river several times, in order to pick up paths.

I really liked the buildings, the tiles, the church steeples...

Bernkastel-Kues made a great first night stop Lots of attractive buildings around the Marktplatz and the well known Bernkasteler Doctor wine vineyard...

...and Landshut castle overlooking the town.

A view from the castle.

And the square at night just outside our hotel.
